Having been involved in Fair Trade imports with Trade Aid for a long time we've become more and more aware that just giving growers via the co-ops a better price etc is not enough. There is a trend of a decrease in coffee production in many coffee producing areas around the world. This means that less and less coffee will come out of areas like Guatemala and the people involved in the production of coffee in these regions will be worse off in the future even if we buy using the present Fair Trade sources. What we realised needed to happen was a more sustainable model in the future and that this would involve ensuring that the trees that produce the beans for us and the income for people like those in Guatemala continued to give healthy yields in the future. This in turn would require assisting the regeneration and replanting of trees to replace old unproductive ones and continuing the cycle of new trees into the future.
